about
“Maimed past / Distorted future”
Radio broadcasts disseminating Soviet narrative shaped the public’s perception of Laika. As her story passed from her handlers, to Soviet propagandists, to radio broadcasters, and finally to the public, the truth of Laika’s situation was steadily eroded.
Many broadcasts depicted her as a male dog and played audio of her bark to mask the truth of her weakened state - partly shaved, hooked up to sensors, and bound in a laboratory environment. Physical imagery of Laika was rarely shared with the public, and what little was shared was similarly heavily censored and curated to keep up the facade.
lyrics
Maimed past, distorted future
A masquerade of senses
Reluctant in awakening
His form observed betrayed by reverence
Perceived failures have become irrelevant
Guided thoughts are straining her
A lost aspiration to lead
A ritual of universal drain
Of her vigor
Of his aegis
A continued orbit
A ritual of universal drain
Maimed past, distorted future
To hunt down
To discover and institute
To command her and employ
To command her and to suppress
His voice is broadcast
Her image concealed
A feint for the subjects
Ignoring the real
A timeless ritual to prepare
An empty promise to protect
A hopeless body to employ
An empty cycle to reconnect

I love the light and shade between Bryan's dirty and Emma's forlorn vocals. There are so many layers to this recording that are driven home through contrast. Plus the riffs are brilliant and get me moving. I can't stop listening to Thou and Emma in general lately. spaceman2250

What an impressive piece of black metal. This one-man hurricane is pure art. Sgah‘gahsowáh creates an haunting atmosphere. He puts so much soul in his music. Sælzer Bub
